A nice example of a bone block from an ichthyosaur from the world-famous Jurassic Coast beach of Lyme Regis, Dorset UK.
The piece or Jurassic shale matrix measures 180mm (7.1 inches) tall and contains one large rib from an adult ichthyosaur with a width of 15mm. A rib of this size would have come from an ichthyosaur measuring at least 6 metres long.
The level of preservation in the bone is high and it has been carefully prepared using air abrasive techniques to reveal all the details of the bone.
The fossil weighs 1145 grams and can be displayed flat or standing on its own freely as it has a cut-flat base. The shale matrix has been stabilised using a rock-coloured plaster.
These fossils were first found by pioneering Victorian fossils hunters like Mary Anning. Ichthyosaur bones are very popular fossils from this location.
Around 198 million years old (Sinemurian, Early Jurassic), this fossil would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
