An unusual example of an ammonite fossil of the species Xipheroceras planicosta from the world-famous Jurassic Coast beach of Lyme Regis, Dorset UK.
The piece of limestone matrix measures 145 mm (5.75 inches) across and the fossil ammonite measures 43 mm (1.7 inches). The ammonite is very well preserved and has been prepared out of the rock to reveal the shell. It is an unusual example as there is a geological fault line running through the rock that cuts through the ammonite. The ribs are finely defined, and the mixed brown colour is beautiful. A crack in the outer whorl has been consolidated. A very unique example with a story to tell!
A great example of the species and impressive in the flesh. The fossil weighs 345 grams and has a cut flat base to allow it to stand freely for display.
Around 196 million years old (Sinemurian, Early Jurassic), this fossil would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
